A Stamp of Verification
Strolling out along Newark Avenue under the crisp afternoon sun, I stepped into the foyer of the corner antique bookshop. Resting upon the worn wooden counter ledge beside an open ledger lay a heavy brass date stamper with rotating date bands, left idling slightly askew on an empty sheet of heavy kraft paper. Rather than allowing such an official implement to remain idle, I decided to test its mechanical readiness. Bracing my boots against the warm timber grain, I aligned the circular brass housing squarely with both hands and bore downward with firm, measured balance. The internal spring yielded with a clean, sharp mechanical clack, leaving an immaculate, round red seal centered precisely on the paper margin. Standing at ease, I adjusted my cuffs with quiet satisfaction.
