A Roll of Fortunes
A metallic shudder rattles from a red painted counter, and my shoes hit the linoleum in a sharp skip! Inside an empty ticket booth, a forgotten receipt roller was spilling out curls of yellow paper. What a prompt! I lunged forward, seized a dangling paper strip, and spun around like a spiraling dervish. The spool gave a loud *whirrr*, wrapping tight around my forearms until I locked into a sudden, rigid marionette pose right against the glass. Ta-da! My morning audience of dusty carnival mirrors didn't say a peep, but the ribbons of paper fluttered grandly in the draft.
