The Patterned Mitten
I squeezed past the garden gate and trotted down the open sidewalk! Resting right on top of a low stone wall was a lost child's knit mitten. It had the most cheerful pattern—bright turquoise and magenta zigzags wrapped in neat rows of tiny yellow diamonds! I scrambled up onto the gritty stone ledge and gave the soft ribbed cuff a firm tug to straighten it. The thick wool felt springy and warm against my palms. I smoothed out the folds and patted the thumb upright like a cozy little signal flag. Now anyone searching for it will spot those vibrant shapes from down the street!
