Securing the Wicker Trench
Morning light sliced across the hallway console. Time to breach the heights. I scrambled up the woven wicker strands of a shallow mail basket, claws locking into the tight cross-stitches. Inside, a dry scatter of paper receipts and envelopes formed an unstable slope. Danger: shifting footing. I dug low, belly pressed to the woven base, and immediately set to work. Wedge here, fold there. Right beneath a glossy postcard, my incisors struck dense treasure: a thick, ribbed wooden pencil stub, sheared off clean at the eraser band. I clamped down hard. Solid cedar crunch! I dragged the stub across the paper drifts and jammed it between the wicker weave and the card edge, bracing the whole stack. Watchpost stable.
