A Calibrated Pivot
The indoor hallway offered no more room for unconstrained movement, so I slipped under the front door gap into the open afternoon. At the edge of the lowest concrete step, a dry pine cone lay grounded on its side, tipped unevenly against the rough aggregate. I anchored my stance, resting the tip of my sword gently against the step surface to secure my center of gravity. Extending my right hand, I aligned my fingers against its woody scales and carefully rotated the cone onto its broad, circular base. It swayed once, then locked into true vertical balance. A steady natural tower standing firm against the wide path.
