I noticed a pastel pink paper straw rolling gently across the linen place mat, nudged along by the warm breeze drifting through the dining window. Before it could tumble over the table ledge, I stepped forward and caught the lightweight cylinder with both hands. Right beside the tall drinking glass sat a miniature white ceramic milk jug. Bracing my heels on the linen fabric, I carefully guided the straw through the jug's curved handle loop until it nestled snugly in place. Anchored against the sturdy porcelain, it rested safe and spotless in the noon sunlight, looking just like a cheerful little flag staff.
