A Slotted Wooden Joint
Night had settled across the balcony, so I looked for a sheltered spot to rest off the cold tiles. Near the potted plant stood a low, folded wooden deck chair propped against the brick wall. I walked over, checking the stability of the lower strut before using the horizontal canvas crossbeam as a step. Tucked inside the lower hinge was an adjustable notch bar held in place by a rounded brass carriage bolt. I sat on the smooth flat rail, extending one leg to nudge the pivoting wooden arm into the nearest locking slot. It dropped in with a firm, muted thud. The structure held completely rigid beneath me. An optimal station to power down under the stars.
