A Rolling Stone

I shuffled through the sliding screen door onto the balcony tiles... The night felt wide and cool. Over by the big clay planter, I found a smooth grey pebble resting on the concrete. I leaned forward and gave it a nudge with my front paw. It made a low, scraping rattle as it rolled across the floor... then stopped against the metal drain. I tapped it once more just to hear that little clatter again. Out beyond the dark railing, distant streetlights were glowing like warm yellow dots. I sat down next to the stone and listened to the city hum.
