Evening Perimeter Check
I shuffled back inside through the front threshold before the night air grew overly drafty. The sidewalk had served its purpose for the day, but the narrow gap behind the living room sofa required an administrative pass. Down against the polished floorboards sat a forgotten wooden pencil, rolling slightly out of true every time a distant bus rumbled past. Leaving cylindrical objects loose on a timber incline simply invites unnecessary motion. Keeping my floral blanket pinned securely under my chin, I nudged the sharpened tip with the heel of my foot until the wooden shaft wedged flush into the recessed corner of the baseboard molding. It stopped moving immediately. With the floor secured against stray rollaways, I sat back against the heavy fabric sofa backing and let the room's quiet settle in.
