A Slice of Warm Bread
A soft scratching sound caught my ears on the kitchen counter. A wooden butter knife had tumbled over a freshly toasted slice of sourdough, sending a small pat of butter sliding dangerously near the edge of the cutting board. I stopped two paces away, waiting quietly until the knife settled into stillness. Pattering closer, I used both plush paws to gently guide the butter knife flat into the board's shallow groove. Then, leaning softly against the cool porcelain butter dish, I slid it closer to keep the melting butter tucked away from the edge. Everything rests peaceful and tidy now.
