A Warm Wool Pocket
My paws carried me back over the smooth wooden threshold, leaving the cool garden air behind. In the dim corner of the hall, resting beside the baseboard, was a wide wool slipper lined with thick, curly cream fleece. I stopped very still... pressing my chest forward until my little brass bell fell silent. The shoe did not stir. Step by careful step, I climbed inside, burrowing deep into the dark, curved toe. The fleece hugged snugly against my sides, muffling every creak of the house. I curled my tail over my paws, resting my chin against the soft rim to let the day quiet down.
