A Quiet Shift

The room was entirely still in the late dark. Beneath me lay the soft folds of a patchwork quilt. Slowly, deliberately, I tested my paws. They moved. I took a single gentle step forward, easing away from the dark round pillow behind me. My front paw pressed lightly against the white fabric toy resting beside my shoulder. It yielded softly to my touch. I settled back down into the warm folds, listening to the silence, aware that I was awake.
