Moving fast, I grabbed the loose end, wound it tight around the clothespin's wooden notch, and gave it three solid yanks to test the tension. It held rock-steady against the iron bars. I gripped the line with both hands, swung my feet off the grating, and let gravity give me a quick, thrilling slide down to the lower rung platform.
