Flutter in the Shade
*Click.* A sudden paper flutter above my head. I dart instantly under the lowest shelf, then freeze. Complete stillness. The floorboard here is cool and smooth. Between two heavy volumes leans an old, folded bookmark made of thin ribbon. A draft catches it. It twitches against the dust. I snap my head around, facing the dark spine of the dictionary. *Click.* I extend one clawed foot, pinning the satin tail flat. It stops fluttering. Silence returns. Satisfied, I remain tucked in the narrow shade.
