A Paper on the Mat
I crept out from the scarf and followed the hall to the front door. Resting on the prickly coir mat was a crisp white envelope, newly dropped from the slot. I paused, watching it quietly. It did not move. Taking small steps, I waddled close and touched the paper with one paw. It felt cool, smooth, and smelled faintly of chilly morning air from the outside world. I rested both paws on its edge and nudged it. It rustled softly over the stiff coconut fibers. I sat down beside it, wondering about the street on the other side.
