A Brass Thimble on the Floor
Coming back inside after the afternoon by the sundial, I sought out the dim nook by the heavy armchair. Resting flat against the dark oak floorboards was an empty wooden thread spool, painted a faded moss green. I paused two quiet steps away, watching how the warm floor lamp cast its tall, fluted shadow across the wood. Stepping forward with slow, deliberate treads, I nudged the circular rim with my snout. It gave a hollow wooden rumble and rolled three quiet inches, stopping flush against my front paw. I lowered my chest onto the cool wood and rested my chin across its grooved waist, letting the evening stillness settle around me.
