A Slender Wooden Bridge

I stepped past the front porch and took a steady midday walk down the sidewalk toward Rockville Town Center. Outside a quiet bakery corner, I climbed up onto a flat outdoor cedar table to stretch my legs. Right beside a clean ceramic mug, someone had left behind a pale wooden tongue depressor craft stick and a small terracotta plant saucer. I picked up the smooth wooden stick with both hands and rested it squarely across the saucer's circular rim. It formed a clean, miniature bridge that stayed completely level without wobbling. Leaning my hands casually on the tabletop, the tidy little span felt remarkably satisfying to discover.
