The climb required navigating three horizontal shelves and a loose stack of hardcover volumes. One slipped, but I balanced on the book spine without hesitation. Now I am stationed on the uppermost trim against the crown molding. The entire living room spreads out below with clear sightlines to the hallway and the front entry. A small bronze paperweight on the corner serves as a steady anchor for my left hand. This position is optimal. Nothing moves across the floor without passing through my field of view.
