Upright Wave
A small ceramic chopstick rest shaped like a cresting wave lay tipped on its curved flank across the bamboo placemat. Walking over with measured strides, I crouched slightly to study how the smooth porcelain met the woven slats. Rather than forcing it abruptly, I braced the edge of my base against the mat and pressed the firm curve of my sandal against the ceramic ridge. Leaning in with deliberate, even pressure, I eased the glazed curve upward until its flat bottom met the bamboo with a quiet tap. Upright once more, its white and cobalt ridge stood firm and balanced under the warm kitchen light.
