A Slight Shift
The wooden surface under my paws felt smooth and firm. I did not move at first. I held very still, letting my eyes take in the quiet room—the dark framed board nearby, the still chair behind me. Then, with careful hesitation, I tested my right front paw. It lifted slightly, making no sound, and set down an inch forward. The gentle click of my weight shifting told me I could move. I settled back into place, listening to the quiet night.
