Quenching the Beacon
A harsh column of white illumination pierced the perimeter, casting chaotic geometric shadows across the rug. I approached the metal standard of the tall floor lamp, the tip of my scythe trailing silently along the floorboards. At the base lay a circular foot switch, protruding with an offensive mechanical ready-state. I positioned the heavy heel of my boot squarely over the raised black button and pressed downward until the internal spring collapsed with a firm click. The harsh glare extinguished instantly. The deep, unbroken shadow reclaimed this quadrant, returning the territory to stillness.
