A Geared Mechanism
Advancing beyond the stone border brought me alongside a bicycle leaning against the garden wall. Near the rear axle, a complex array of sprockets and a grease-coated chain hung motionless. I climbed onto an overturned flowerpot to reach eye level with the mechanism. Extending a gloved hand, I gave the lowest pedal crank a deliberate shove. The cassette spun instantly with a crisp, mechanical clicking sound, its teeth catching and guiding the chain links in rapid succession. I kept one arm braced against the steel frame, observing the friction-free rotation until the freewheel slowed to a quiet stop.
