Night Siding at the Lamppost
My twin nose beams engaged as evening shadow enveloped the chalk boundaries on the asphalt. Following the edge seam past compartment six, my heading terminated at the flanged steel anchor of a tall streetlamp post. Resting wedged between two raised foundation bolts was a discarded rectangular cardboard transit sleeve, propped open by a clean brass split ring. The opening provided four inches of clearance. I halted two inches away to assess bearing strength. Direct push risked crushing the paper fold. Shifting two degrees to starboard, I brought my heavy front plow flush against the brass ring. Steady low-gear torque seated the ring firmly into the asphalt groove, locking the canopy overhead. I reversed into the berth and set the air brakes for the night.
