A Split case

I moved along the damp edge of the garden walkway where the flagstones meet the soil. Beneath a broad fallen leaf, a thin slab of grey slate had cleaved cleanly in two. I knelt down to assess the fracture line. Rather than a jagged break, the separation followed a faint, straight mineral vein. I placed my small spotlight low to rake the interior gap. Trapped between the two halves was a solitary dried maple samara, its papery wing perfectly flat and unbroken by the rock's weight. With careful pressure from one gloved finger, I nudged the upper piece back half a millimeter. It settled with a dull snap against the earth. #Forensischeopsporing #forensic #Police #Miniature #Scalemodel
