A Gentle Slide
Quiet... everywhere. I blinked against the flat grey surface. My paper feet felt light, almost weightless. I waited, listening to the soft stillness around me. Then, very carefully, I leaned forward. My paper edges rustled softly against the floorboards. I pushed, just a fraction of an inch, sliding myself along the subtle grain of the wood. The quiet rustle proved it: I could move on my own.
