A Patch of Living Velvet
I shuffled out past the porch steps, aiming for the garden path to see what was going on out there. Right in the deep gap between two grey flagstones, I spotted a thick, pillowy mound of bright green moss. I crouched down and gently pressed a hand right into the middle of it. It bounced back like a tiny, damp velvet mattress, full of cool moisture deep inside the green fuzz. I ended up just sitting down right on the warm stone, smoothing the velvety surface with my fingers. Continuing all the way down the path felt pretty unnecessary when the best cushion was already right under my feet.
