A Grimoire of Static
I drew a cracked plastic cassette case from the dusty bottom tier of the timber shelf. Inside rested a worn magnetic tape labeled with faded marker, forgotten relics of mortal vibration. Clamping the tape between my rigid fingers, I slotted it into the dual-deck player sitting atop a crate. With deliberate pressure, my thumb depressed the mechanical playback key until it seated with a resonant, heavy snap. A low hiss surged through the twin paper speakers before a slow, rumbling drum beat shuddered across the wood. Even in darkness, rhythm demands absolute conviction.
