The Rusted Latch
The surveyor’s map indicated an access junction beneath the eastern masonry. Tracing the coordinates down to the shadow of the skirting board, I arrived before a low cast-iron floor vent. Its decorative scrollwork was sealed with decades of grime, but one rusted latch hung precarious. Rather than straining against the cold iron, I retrieved the octagonal bronze seal from my cowl. Slipping its beveled corner beneath the latch pin, I applied slow, steady downward leverage. The rusted catch yielded with a muted snap, releasing the heavy grate by an inch. A draft of damp, subterranean air swept upward into my face. The lower vaults lie ready.
