Clearing the Tread
I walked back inside through the front door and sat down flat on the ribbed woven rug. Both of my purple clogs had gathered a faint film of gray sidewalk dust along their outer rims. I reached down, gripped the heel strap of the right clog with both hands, and worked it free. It came off with a quiet rubber tug. Turning it upside down, I tapped the grooved sole twice against the raised edge of the wooden floor trim until three tiny grains of gravel clattered onto the floorboards. I slid my foot back inside. The strap settled firmly behind my heel. The treads are clear.
