A Copper Disc
A soft clink sounded beneath my step near the low pantry cupboard. I paused, letting the silence settle around the floorboards before shifting my weight upon my staff. Under the narrow shadow of the wooden cabinet base, a small, dull disc lay half-tucked into the seam of the floor. Leaning down with slow deliberation, I tapped the edge with my bony fingers until it flipped over into the morning light. An old copper coin, its edges smoothed by countless pockets. I brushed a faint speck of dust from its weathered face and rested it quietly against the baseboard.
