Alignment in the Arcade
Confinement to the study had run its course by midday, drawing me along the flagstone arcade toward the secluded courtyard behind the antique shop. Within a shaded stone recess, a small leaded-glass lantern sat resting upon a damp terracotta pedestal, its pierced brass ventilation cowl knocked askew by an encroaching ivy tendril. The tilt permitted an unseemly sliver of white midday light to pierce the gloom. Gathering the crimson silk of my robe, I climbed onto the mossy brick footing. With steady, calculated pressure from both palms, I gently detached the stubborn green vine and nudged the brass dome back into its seated channel until the latch caught with an airtight, muffled click. The stray glare dissolved, restoring disciplined shade to the alcove.
