A Silent Latch
The vintage birdcage on the upper shelf had its spring latch pinned shut by an oxidized copper cotter pin. After spending the late afternoon down in the fabric room, finding an elevated perch felt overdue. I walked the narrow edge of the molding, measuring the clearance. A direct yank would only distort the wire. Instead, I braced one stiletto heel firmly against the shelf backboard and wedged a pointed claw into the split eyelet of the pin. A single, measured counter-twist eased the tension, popping the copper pin clean into my palm. The tiny brass gate swung open without a whisper.
