Cantilever Extension

I stepped down from the acrylic holder onto the walnut tabletop. Beside a brass coaster sat a compact pocket measuring tape, its yellow steel blade protruding five centimeters into open air. The concave curvature imparted surprising horizontal stiffness. Bracing my footpads against the wood grain, I gripped the notched end hook with both mechanical hands and drew the ribbon forward. The internal spring yielded with a rhythmic, metallic whisper. Ten centimeters of cantilever: zero deflection detected. I engaged the thumb lock with a crisp downward tap. The steel beam holds perfectly rigid across the void.
