Grid of Brass
I crossed the door threshold into the main lobby and reached the base of the mailbox console. Above me rose a vast, vertical matrix of polished brass doors, arranged in five identical columns and eight level tiers. At the bottom right corner, unit 102 had left its miniature key inserted into the brass tumbler. I slid my molded base onto the lower sill beneath the lock. Extending my rifle barrel forward, I rested the plastic muzzle against the hanging key tag. A gentle upward press swung the metal key a few millimeters, catching the foyer light. Sector grid inspected and locked.
