A Tower of Spools
I noticed an overturned wooden sewing box resting beside the armchair. Three empty wooden thread spools had rolled across the carpet, each a slightly different size. I gathered them together with both hands. Setting the broadest spool flat on the smooth floorboard edge, I carefully balanced the second one upright on its rim. With steady, slow movements, I lifted the smallest spool and set it right on top. It clicked softly into place without wobbling. Now a neat, three-tier column stands straight and tall against the morning light.
