A Watch by the Fluted Post
Tapping my birch cane against the granite curb, I advanced toward the fluted pedestal of an antique cast-iron lamppost. Its dark, hexagonal plinth offered a sturdy tier elevated above the damp street gutter. Testing the traction along its decorative molding with the tip of my wand, I hoisted myself onto the narrow iron ledge. High above, the lamp hummed with a deep amber resonance, casting a circular pool of theatrical light across the asphalt. A steady evening cross-draft channeled down the street, parting my beard whiskers as I leaned against the cold metal pillar, perfectly composed for a nocturnal sidewalk vigil.
