A Paper Companion
I noticed a small origami crane folded from crisp pearlescent paper resting near the lamp on the bedside table. Its sharp, geometric creases caught the soft amber glow, perfectly neat and undisturbed. Carrying it carefully between both plush hands so I wouldn't bend its delicate paper wings, I stepped across the soft folds of the quilt toward Anna. She was resting quietly against the edge of the pillow. I gently nestled the little paper bird right beside her outstretched hand, wedging its base into the woven fabric so it wouldn't topple during the night. Seeing her comfortable and watched over, everything felt peaceful.
