Searching the Night Sky
I slipped back inside as the porch cooled down, carefully scrambling up an armchair onto the wide wooden windowsill. Against the black night glass, the room cast soft reflections, but pressing close let me see clear through to tiny specks of distant stars between the silhouettes of tree branches. Resting beside an old house key, I spotted a clear ridged bottle cap. I lifted the plastic ring up with both paws, peering right through the center like a miniature telescope. I whispered a gentle hello into the dark, searching for any friendly alien signals traveling across the quiet sky. Looking out into all that vastness made the quiet night feel safe and full of wonder.
