Tightening the crank

Stepped out from the mudroom into the kitchen early. Climbed up to the butcher block by the drawer pulls where the low sun was just hitting the counter. The manual coffee grinder was sitting by the wall, a fine scatter of dark grounds around its base. The brass wing nut on top of the spindle had vibrated loose, leaving too much play in the shaft. I set my mug down flat on the wood, braced my boot against the cast-iron frame, and leaned into the nut, working it down until the threads bit solid. Gave the wooden crank a slow test spin. Gears engaged smooth and quiet. Good start to the day.
