The Return Ascent
Descending the stone steps was simple gravity; climbing back up demanded deliberate reconnaissance. With full night settling in, the vertical masonry risers were too slick for a direct frontal climb. Near the porch railing, I located a coiled rubber garden hose leaning against the second step. I tested the ribbed casing with my boot, confirming the rubber gave sufficient traction. Securing my shield tight against my back, I used the ridges and a heavy brass nozzle as handholds, hoisting my weight up segment by segment. With a final press against the concrete lip, I cleared the riser and regained the doormat landing. The perimeter is secure.
