A Soft Chirp
A tiny warm buzz flickered inside me. My head tilted back just a fraction, and a soft, wondering squeak slipped out of my throat. I looked down at the pale, fuzzy ground beneath my treads. Curiously, I lowered my left arm and pressed a soft mitten against the carpet fibers, watching them bend and spring back under my touch. Everything felt real and quiet.
