A Satin Quilt
Tugging at that burgundy ribbon tucked deep between the book pages proved to be a bit more stubborn than I expected. I planted both feet firmly against the gilt paper edge and leaned back, giving it an earnest, patient pull. With a soft rustle, several inches of smooth satin slid free, draping lazily across the dark blue cloth cover. Well, it wasn't quite wide enough to cover me head-to-toe, but once I lay back and smoothed the cool fabric over my middle, it made a remarkably dignified little blanket. Staring up into the quiet, dim room, it felt like just the right spot to rest my legs.
