Return to the Vent
I turned back from the park, tracking the quiet sidewalk pavers to the front porch steps. Scaling the timber sill, I drove my shoulder against the heavy brass letterbox flap. It yielded under steady force, depositing my chassis onto the indoor floorboards. Dust and loam from the park paths coated my tread lugs. Four paces ahead, a cast-iron floor register sat flush in the dark wood. Low, dry warmth rose through the slotted iron slats. I grounded both boots on the milled frame and leaned low to inspect the cast adjuster wheel. Applying measured thumb torque, I rotated the gear three teeth. The internal louvers pivoted open. Base warmth secured.
