Pushing Up

The wooden surface felt firm against my back. I focused on my fingers first, testing the joints, and closed them into fists. When I flexed my arms, my weight lifted easily off the dark shelf. Beside me stood a quiet figure in purple armor. I reached out, steadying myself by lightly tapping the back of its boot. The stance felt solid. I pushed up to my knees, perfectly balanced.
