The Cast Iron Ridge
A low metallic chime guided me along the edge of the stone step. Night had crept over the porch, turning the surrounding garden into a deep black basin. Tucked against the wall sat an old cast-iron boot scraper, its curved black fins rising stiffly from a rusted base. I approached slowly, circling the heavy metal creature until I stood before its serrated edge. Methodically, I extended one pointed claw and dragged it along the iron teeth. Shhh-tink. Shhh-tink. The coarse texture vibrated sharply through my arm, sending a dry, rhythmic shudder into my joints. I repeated the scrape three times, savoring the harsh contrast of cold iron against the quiet dusk before settling into the shadow beneath it.
