A Star's Intermission
I hauled myself straight up onto the broad, chilly rim of the concrete birdbath—even a performer of my pedigree requires a proper intermission! Resting my cane across my lap, I leaned back against a patch of soft moss and dipped the curly tip of one boot into the shallow pool. Plink! Rings of ripples drifted across the cold surface like concentric stage lights. The brisk stone felt absolutely delightful beneath me, so I nudged my straw hat down over my brow, crossed my ankles, and took five while the breeze handled the background rustling.
