Perimeter Relay
Down on the mid-level landing, the echo was too loud for stealth. Sound discipline matters when you're navigating vertical shafts. Wedged near the heavy steel handrail bracket, I recovered a lost rubber headphone cushion, black silicone with a hollow core. Pure acoustic dampening material. I braced my boots against the textured gray concrete, gripped the flexible ring in both thumbs, and stretched it tight over the sharp corner of the metal railing post. Tapped it hard with my knuckle: zero ring, just a dead, muffled thud. Echo neutralized. The path downward stays quiet.
