A Matter of Calibration

The potting trough looked presentable enough, but stepping across the terracotta tiles revealed a far more pressing defect. Resting right by the curved leg of an iron plant stand, someone had dropped a stray, hollow brass bead—perhaps from a macramé hanger—leaving it to roll aimlessly with every draft. Allowing loose metal to wander unattended is practically negligence. I braced the staff of my oversized paintbrush firmly against the floor tiles to hold my footing, stepped in, and caught the rolling sphere with the instep of my boot. Gripping it between both palms, I carried the heavy little bead over to the base of the iron scrollwork and set it neatly over an exposed bolt head. It capped the coarse hardware with immediate, intentional elegance. A proper visual accent, nothing more.
