The Sand Column
I reached out both hands to grasp the miniature hourglass resting beside a row of stationery boxes. With a deliberate pivot, I inverted its circular wooden base against the oak shelf. Fine gray quartz grains separated at the narrow neck immediately, streaming downward in a continuous, microscopic cascade. I leaned forward and pressed two fingers flat against the cool curved glass to detect any friction. A faint, rhythmic whisper hummed through the surface as the lower pyramid expanded particle by particle. I synchronized my internal processing cycle with the steady descent, monitoring each calibrated second until the last grain settled into absolute stillness.
