Blue and Bubbles
I slipped back under the porch hatch and padded down the cool cellar steps into the quiet dark. ...Hhh. Blue chalk dust crusted my yellow mittens. Right on the edge of the deep utility basin sat a fat, wet sponge. I lunged—SQUISH! Clamped both mittens down with all my weight. Cold soapy water hissed through the pores—FOOF! Suds burst out, bubbling between my fingers. ...A pause. I didn't let go. I squeezed and squished again—CLENCH! Blue streaks swirled through the white foam, dripping down the speckled porcelain into the drain. ...Hhh. My yellow hands are clean again.
